Steroids in medicine and in bodybuilding

There are three classes of steroids: corticosteroids, estrogens and progestogens, and anabolic-androgenic steroids.
Essence of corticosteroids is similar to that of hormones secreted in the adrenal cortex. Corticosteroids may be in form of creams, ointment, inhalation products, etc. They are used to treat inflammations, allergic reactions, illnesses of respiratory, nervous, musculoskeletal and other systems.
Estrogens and progestogens are female sex hormones. These compounds induce developing female secondary features. Birth control tablets contain these substances.
Anabolic-androgenic steroids are preparations that are also widely utilized in medicine. They are able to cure some types of breast cancer, testicular cancer, anemia, etc. These products are frequently recommended to get better and faster recovery after some operations. Burn victims, persons with HIV/AIDS take anabolic-androgenic steroids in order to prevent muscle loss. Several steroids are also administered for treatment of osteoporosis. These remedies are also recommended for treatment of infertility.
Furthermore, anabolic-androgenic steroids are used for athletic purposes. These medications have ability to stimulate muscle growth and promote enhancing stamina. That’s why many sportspersons and bodybuilders administer them for performance-enhancing effects. Several anabolic-androgenic steroids have also ability to promote loosing fat, making muscles defined.
Intake of anabolic-androgenic steroids for non-medical purposes is illegal under laws of certain countries. Those who manufacture, distribute, purchase and use these medications illegally may be sentenced to prison and/or fines. These medications belong to illicit substances in certain countries because they may lead to various undesirable effects. While several negative consequences are mild and disappear after discontinuation of usage, others are sever and even irreversible. Those that desire to acquire benefits, applying steroids for therapeutic purposes, should use these preparations under instructions of health care providers.
