Nadzeya Ostapchuk, a shot putter from Belorussia won the gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics. But she was stripped of the medal because she was caught using the anabolic steroid metenolone (methenolone). She was asked to provide two samples. The substance metenolone was found in both urine samples.
If you read news related to steroid use in sports, you must know that professional sportspersons and bodybuilders are usually caught administering other steroids and/or doping products. But when it comes to Nadzeya Ostapchuk, she was caught taking metenolone. It is strange, according to statements of anti-doping officers. What does this banned drug represent? Why don’t athletes usually use this medication for increase of performance?
Metenolone belongs to anabolic steroids. It has weak androgenic features. It acts like testosterone, enhancing muscle mass and adding energy.
Although this drug has just weak androgenic nature, it leads to development of sex male characteristics in females. Women that take this medicine may face common virilizing effects: the voice becomes deeper; excessive hair grows on the face and on other parts of the body; etc.
This anabolic steroid can be taken orally or injectionally.
Metenolone (Methenolone) produces amazing effects, when it is taken by sportspersons during their trainings. It is not used during competitions. It doesn’t work, if it is administered only on the day of a competition.
It is also confirmed that it is easy to catch those that apply this steroid.
Side effects of Metenolone (Methenolone) depend on measures which are applied. They include water retention, hypercalcaemia, bone growth, hirsutism, acne formation, hair loss, troubles linked with menstrual cycles, increased libido, etc.
Thus, when you see a female athlete who has deep voice and hirsutism, you may suspect her of steroid use. Actually, it is wrong because these troubles may appear also in those females that don’t administer any steroids. But sometimes these effects display that certain women apply preparations which have androgenic properties.
